I have been asked on a few occasions why I do these DVD's and some people just assume its for the financial benefit, well the price and work involved definitely doesn't reflect that assumption, and that's possibly because its not the case anyway. There are many great DVD's out there by various artists and I should know because I own a few. They are a great source of inspiration and ideas but I noticed that for the most part they seemed to assume certain things about the viewer and his or her level of knowledge or ability, regardless whether they are listed as for a beginner or intermediate. Watercolour DVD's in particular often start with a drawing done. The drawing or under drawing as it is known is just as important in my way of thinking as the actual laying on of the paint, it's the foundation of the painting, the skeleton if you like of the whole body which is the picture. If your drawing is wrong, the picture will never look right, yours, mine or anybody's. I wanted to come up with a series of lessons which assumed very little or nothing about the student and their prior knowledge or ability apart from sharing a common language. This is the driving motivation and idea behind Beginnings in Watercolour Painting. These DVD's will not turn you into a skilled draughts person but they will get you started and they don't assume anything. By following the instructions it makes it possible for you to get your initial drawing down on paper so you can progress on to the really fun part of completing the painting that the lesson deals with. The common problems of composition, the positioning of the drawing on your paper and perspective are all addressed and worked out for you. Ok it's not like having your own art teacher in the room with you, we can't ask a DVD questions, but it's the next best thing, and it works. All 'Beginnings in Watercolour' painting tuition DVD's contain step by step instruction based on one of David's original paintings. David takes you step by step through drawing out the major sections of your picture in pencil, laying on the first washes of colour through to completion of your painting. There is in depth information on the brushes, paint, paper and most importantly the techniques used to complete the finished painting. Having the exact brush size/make is not imperative however it will help you to follow the instruction more closely. All the techniques used are traditional watercolour methods that can be used later on future projects of your own.
